HUSBAND NOTES:
John Stanton studied at Harvard. John Stanton was in the military in Connecticut in 1675. He was Captain of one of the four Connecticut Regiments in King Philip's War which broke out when Indians tried to reclaim land settled by the whites. It was a bloody affair and one out of every 16 white males of military age was killed. The Europeans won. John Stanton took Chief Canonchet as prisoner, he was the chief sachem of all the Narragansets. He was a pupil of the famous Puritian, Elijah Corlet. In 1654 he and John Minor were selected to be teachers of the Gospel to the Indians. In 1664 he became the first recorder of the town of Southertown (now Stonington), Connecticut. He was fined for protesting against the General Assembly of Connecticut, 10 pounds, and forbidden to hold office. It was later revoked. On 10 May 1710 a deed of trust was executed in favor of Captain John Stanton by which the eastern part of the Mohegan Lands were settled on the Mohegan Tribe. His home farm was on the banks of the Mystic River in Stonington and was still standing in 1891, when it was still in possession of the Stanton family.
