HUSBAND NOTES: BIOGRAPHY: William Spencer of Cambridge had a brother named Thomas. William was a much betrusted one of the committee appointed 9 May 1632 at the general meeting of the whole people to confer with the assistant and raise common stock which soon led to an erection of the House of Representatives of which he was the first in 1634 and most succeeded until 1638. He was of committee to form the body of fundamental laws in March 1638. and lieutenant of the militia. He was one of the founders of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, being the fourth name on the chart. In March 1639 he went to Hartford and was named representative in April and August of 1639, and January and April of 1640. He died in 1640. His will of 4 May 1641 gave part of his estate to his wife (1/3 in all), his son Samuel got 1/3, and Sarah and Elizabeth his daughters got 1/3. Sarah married John Case of Windsor in 1657 and Elizabeth married William Wellman in 1649 and Jacob Joy on 23 May 1672. Agnes who was Williams widow remarried to William Edwards. William Spencer came from England with brother Gerard and the Reverend Thomas Hooker to Newtown, Massachusetts. in 1633. Mary Case was the daughter of John Case and Sarah Spencer. Sarah Spencer was the daughter of Honorable William Spencer. William Spencer's wife was Agnes Tucker. William Spencer's father was Gerrard Spencer (christened in 1576 in England). Gerrard Spencer came to America in 1632 bringing his 5 sons, which included William Spencer. Gerrard was the son of Michael Spencer. Michael Spencer's father was John Spencer, born in 1568 (was in Stratford, England in 1576) and was married to Ann Gerrard. She was the daughter of Sir William Gerrard, the Lord Mayor of London in 1555. William Spencer returned to England in 1633 and brought back his wife Agnes Tucker on the ship Marie and John. He was a member of the First House of Representatives in 1634 and served until 1638. He moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1638 and was selected as a Representive in that Colony. He prepared the first code of laws for Connecticut. He died in 1640 and his will was probated March 4, 1641. He gave to his son Samuel 1/3 of his estate, to his widow Agnes, 1/3 of his estate, and to his daughers Sarah and Elizabeth 1/3. After his death, Agnes Tucker married William Edwards. While he was in Massachusetts he was appointed by Governor Winthrop to serve as a Judge in Ipswich and Newberry. He was the founder of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston, which is the oldest military organization in America. An inventory of his estate taken after his death reveals he had accumulated a large fortune for those times. He was one of the first settlers of Hartford Connecticut. William Spencer was a man of consequence in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Connecticut Colony, where he later pioneered. He first settled in Newton (now Cambridge Mass.) in 1631 becoming a member of the General Court, Selectman, and Lieutenant in the militia. In 1639 he was named on of the four men to whom Governor John Winthrop granted the charter to form the military company of Massachusetts later changed to the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. In 1639 he pioneered to Connecticut where his name is inscribed on the imposing Capital Founders Monument in the Ancient Burying Grounds in Hartford as one of the founders of the Connecticut Colony. He was later elected a selectman and became a deputy to the first session of the General Court in 1639. He was appointed by the Court to the Committee to make the first code of laws for the Connecticut Colony.
