HUSBAND NOTES:
The 1850 Agricultural Census of Lowndes County Georgia records Thomas Giddens with 50 acres of improved land, 440 acres of unimproved land. $250 cash value of farm, $40 cash value of farming implements, 2 horses, 6 milk cows, 10 other cattle, 70 swine, $320 value of live stock, $200 value of animal, $25 value of homemade manufacturing, 300 bushels of Indian corn, 6 cleaned cotton bales of 400 pounds each, 2 tents, 1000 pounds of cane sugar.

Thomas Giddens was born in 1789 in North Carolina (according the 1850 census birthplace). He married Miss Gregory in North Carolina and had one son, Frederick M. Giddens born in 1813. After his wife died he moved with his parents to Bulloch County, Georgia where he married Mary Nevill, called Pollie. She was born in 1799 and was the daughter of Jacob Nevill and Nicy Henderson. Nevill lived near Statesboro. Thomas and family moved to Lowndes County, Georgia in 1827-1828 and lived in the area around the Lowndes-Thomas County line and is now Colquitt County. He was known as an expert blacksmith. He served in two militia companies in 1838 in the Indian Wars for four months (Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, compiled and published by Folks Huxford, Volume I, pages 94-95 and Volume IV, page 341).

The marriage of Thomas Giddens and Mary Nevill was on 25 Apr 1825 in Bulloch County, Georgia. In the widows Indian War papers, John Giddens says his father is Thomas Giddens and that Mary Giddens was his step mother. The Bulloch County marriage records show the marriage of Thomas Giddens to Mary Baker, but according to the Indian War Bounty land application she was Mary Nevill. Thomas Giddens died at home on 23 Feb 1851 in Lowndes County near the Lowndes - Thomas County line. John Giddens, Jesse Hollingsworth, Thomas Giddens, Jr. and Sabra Giddens were present at his death. This is a correction to his death date and place given in an earlier edition of Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia. He died in 1856 in Colquitt County, Georgia at the home of his daughter Mrs. Emily NeSmith and is buried at Sardis Church Cemetery in that County. Polly died in 1889, she is buried at the old Spring Head Methodist Church (Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Volume IX, page 510).
