HUSBAND NOTES:
Benjamin is not shown in the 1820 Burke County census, leaving us to believe that he died between 25 Feb 1819 and the taking of the 1820 census. He was likely the husband of Abigail shown in the 1820 and 1830 Burke censuses. The fact that Abigail remained in close to Elisha tends to reinforce the assumption that this is her son. There is no concrete evidence to link Elisha Bergeron (b. 1748) to Elisha Bargeron (b. 1801) however the known facts seem to support this conclusion. First the name "Elisha" seems to carry forward from grandfather to grandson. Second, Elisha (b. 1748) is documented by several sources to have moved Burke County, Georgia at about the same time as Benjamin and Elijah, and the age differences would indicate Benjamin and Elijah were his possible sons. Third, the land lottery records of 1805 indicate Benjamin had a family and Elijah did not and additionally indicate the that Elisha, Benjamin, and Elijah were apparently together. Additionally the Bergeron/Bargeron name is unique and searches of available records do not indicate any other possible progenitors for Elijah or Benjamin. There are no known facts that would indicate that this conclusion is invalid. Documented sources provide proof of the lineage from Jacques Bergeron (b. 1680 in France) to the present day Bargerons except that the link between Elisha Bargeron (b. 1748) and his probable son Benjamin Bargeron (b. about 1780) and grandson Elisha Bargeron (b. 1801) cannot be documented.

FROM 1817 AUGUSTA CHRONICLE: Listed under Sheriff's sale: "200 acres of land in the county of Burke originally granted to James Herbert bounded northeastwardly by Briar Creek, southwestwardly by said Herbert's land, southeastwardly by Alan Groves land and northwestwardly by lands of William Sapp at the time of the survey, it being the land whereon Benjamin Barjoron now lives, levied off as property of James Herbert to satisfy on execution in favor of Richard Lovett property pointed out by plaintiff's attorney. signed by John Bell, S.B.C." THIS IS SIGNIFICANT AS IT ESTABLISHES THAT BENJAMIN LIVED ON THE SARDIS SIDE OF BRIAR CREEK (DISTRICT 64) AND SUPPORTS THE SPECULATION THAT HIS WIFE WAS ABIGAIL.

!MISC: Paper titled "Connecting Bergerons in North Carolina to Bargerons in Georgia" dated 6 October 1993, given to Tommy Bargeron by Kathryn Bargeron Wilson, December 1995. Original author C. Brent Bargeron, 5209 Farm Pond Lane, Columbia, Maryland 21045, phone 410/997-0366.

!RESIDENCE-MILITARY: Reverend Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., SOME GEORGIA COUNTY RECORDS, vol. 4, Southern Historical Press, 1991, p 4. Notes that in 1819 Benj. Bargeron was listed in the Burke County militia, 8th Regiment, thus was between age 18 and 45 on 25 February 1819.

!RESIDENCE-MARRIAGE: The Georgia Genealogical Magazine, Folks Huxford, editor, Bicentennial Reprint Edition in commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the United States and the State of Georgia. The 1805 land lottery provides proof that Benjamin Bargeron was a married man with wife and/or child; and Elijah Bargeron was unmarried. Thus Elijah is not the father of Elisha (b. 1801) and Benjamin is a likely candidate.

!FAMILY: REPRINT OF OFFICIAL REGISTER OF LAND LOTTERY OF GEORGIA 1827, compiled and published by Miss Martha Lou Houston, Columbus, Georgia, printed by Walton-Forbes Company, Columbus, Georgia 1928. Reprinted 1976 Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Southern Historical Press, P.O. Box 738, Easley, S.C. 29640.

!LAND-CHILDREN: THE THIRD AND FOURTH OR 1820 AND 1821 LAND LOTTERIES OF GEORGIA, published by Georgia Genealogical Reprints & Southern Historical Press, 1973, page 15. This source cites a grantee in the land lottery from Burke County as "Bargemore's Benj. (orphs)" The grant is shown for Hands Militia District Land Lot No. 213, section 3, in Appling County. Note that a request from Georgia Archives for a copy of this grant indicated the land reverted to the state, thus no further records exist for this grant. The fact that Benjamin had died and had a family (the reference to orphans in 1821) is proven by this record.

!RESIDENCE: THE AUGUSTA CHRONICLE, Wednesday, April 30, 1817. From microfilm copy at Burke County Library, Waynesboro, Georgia. The sigificance of this reference is that Benjamin was alive in 1817, and that he was living in District 64 (since the land was bounded northwestwardly by Briar Creek). This makes him the likely husband of Abigail who is the only Bargeron in District 64 in the 1820 census.

!CENSUS: The 1830 census of Burke County, Georgia does not list Benjamin but has Abigail Bargeron (age 40 to 50) and Elisha Bargeron (age 20 to 30) next door to one another in District 64 and Elijah Bargeron listed in District 68. Comment: It seems likely that due to the ages and close proximity that Abigail and Elisha were likely mother and son.

!LAND-RESIDENCE: REPRINT OF OFFICIAL REGISTER OF LAND LOTTERY OF GEORGIA 1827, compiled and published by Miss Martha Lou Houston, Columbus, Georgia, printed by Walton-Forbes Company, Columbus, Georgia 1928. Reprinted 1976 Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Southern Historical Press, P.O. Box 738, Easley, S.C. 29640. List Abi Bargeron/, wid. Thompsons/ 218/20/1. This indicates Abi was a widow, thus was apparently married to a Bargeron.

!CENSUS: Paper titled "Connecting Bergerons in North Carolina to Bargerons in Georgia" dated 6 October 1993, given to Tommy Bargeron by Kathryn Bargeron Wilson, December 1995. Original author C. Brent Bargeron, 5209 Farm Pond Lane, Columbia, Maryland 21045, phone 410/997-0366.

!CENSUS: The 1820 Census of Burke County, Georgia, District 64. "Abegail Bergeron" is shown as head of household on the 1820 census in Burke County, Georgia. In the household are 1 male age 16 to under 26, 2 white females under 10 years of age, 2 white females 10 to under 16, 1 white female 25 to under 45 (Abigail), 1 person engaged in agriculture, 1 male slave under 14 years of age. (page 28 of census in Burke County). NOTE: The male age 19-26 is possibly Elisha Bargeron (born 1801). Note also that Abigail is in District 64, the same area where Benjamin was recorded in 1817 (Augusta Chronicle). Benjamin had apparently died by 1820 as he is not listed in the census and the 1821 land lottery refers to Benjamin's orphans.

!CENSUS: The 1830 Census of Burke County, Georgia, District 64. "Abigail Bargeron" is shown as head of household on the 1830 census in Burke County, Georgia. In the household are 1 white female age 20 to 30, 1 white female age 50 to under 60, 2 male slaves age 10 to under 23, 3 female slaves under 10 years of age, 1 female slave age 36 to under 54. (page 134 of census in District 64 of Burke County). Note that the census records Elisha Bargeron (born 1801) next door, or living close, to Abigail possibly supporting a mother-son relationship.
