!CENSUS: 1850 Census of Lowndes County, Georgia list Mitchell Griffin (33) as head of household with the following in his household: Rebecca (33), James E. (12), John (11), Simeon (9), Jane (4), Nancy (2).
!CENSUS: 1860 Census of Lowndes County, Georgia (MF-56, roll 29, page 839) records James Griffin (23) with the following in his household: Mary (19), Mitchell (2).
James E. Griffin was captured on 15 Jun 1864 at Pine Mountain, Georgia during the Kennesaw Mountain Battle. He was taken to the military prison at Louisville, Kentucky. On 22 Jun 1864 he was sent to Rock Island, Illinois Prison. On 6 Mar 1865 he was on the muster roll at Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. He was diagnosed as being "dibilitas". He was furloughed on 8 Mar 1865 for 30 days. By then the war was over.
In 1886 he was hired by the Atlantic Coast Line railroad to mill lumber for station houses, trusses, and cross ties. He was one of the first 14 families Lakeland, Florida. His wife, Eleanor died of Typhoid Fever. The 1910 census of Polk County, Florida shows James living in the home Mae and Arnold Armistead. The 1920 census shows him in Polk County, Florida living in the home of Texas and Edwin Flanangan and his occupation was "citrus grower". At his death of which he died of Bright's Disease, he left $1,500 with no debts or liabilities.
