HUSBAND NOTES: John Blanton grew up in Valdosta and graduated from Valdosta High School in 1939, and worked in a grocery store after graduation. He met Doris Kent in Valdosta and they started dating in November of 1939. He was working at the Greyhound station in Valdosta. He moved to Tifton in June 1941 and worked at the Greyhound bus station, located where the current downtown NationsBank drive in facility is. John proposed to Doris on 12/7/1941 in Albany. John and Doris were married on 2/5/1942. They took a Greyhound bus to Jacksonville for their honeymoon. John Blanton joined the Army in November of 1942. For a short time he and Doris lived on Pine Ave., in Albany. He served at North Carolina, Miami, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Turkey and Egypt. John was a airport tower radio operator utilizing Morse code. John had yellow jaundice in Cairo, Egypt. He came home in the winter of 1945. He worked at the bus station for about a year. John sold Southern Life Insurance until December of 1947. In 1947 he started working for Joseph Kent with Tifton Federal Savings and Loan Association. He worked with Tifton Federal until he died in 1981 and served as President and CEO from the early 1970's. The now SunTrust Bank building at 200 John Howard Way was one of his accomplishments, this building was built in 1974-1975. John Blanton was very active in the community. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, served on the Development Authority, a member of the Rotary Club, received the Stafford Award, served on the Board of Education, First Methodist Church Administrative Board, served on the Tifton Tift County Library Board.
