HUSBAND NOTES:
From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996.

Honorable Henry Wolcott was a Governor's Assistant.

(1) He was of Dorchester and was born about 1578 in the South part of Somerset near Wellington and not far from the edge of Devonshire. He probably had sympathy with the Puritans of the West who provisioned the voyage of the "Mary and John" in March of that year. He was the Honorable with a Commission from the Crown as a Justice before leaving home as tradition tells. He had good landed estate as can be inferred from a valuable letter of his brother John 15 Apr 1639. He was sworn in 1 Apr 1634.

(1) His wife, Elizabeth Saunders, who he married around 1601 was his companion in the traverse of the Wilderness to plant the first town named Dorchester. Soon after they went to Windsor on the Connecticut in Oct 1634.

(1) Their children are: (a) Henry b. 1610 m. Sarah Newberry, (b) George, (c) Christopher died 7 Sep 1662, (d) Ann b. 1620 m. Matthew Griswold, (e) Simon b. 1625, (f) Mary m. Job Drake. All of these children were born in England.

(1) Henry Wolcott is the first officer named in the record of Connecticut. He was chosen 26 Apr 1636 as Constable and in Apr 1643 Assistant until his death. He died 30 May 1655. His wife died 17 Jul 1655 at age 73.

(3) This reference confirms birth date and place. States he came to America in 1628 and returned to England. He was a member of the General Court from Windsor and one of the principal men in the first settlement of the colony. In 1643 he was choosen Magistrate and continued in office until his death in 1655. He married Elizabeth "Sanders" and the information given about their children matches that above except that George is not listed.

(3) Henry Wolcott was the son of John Wolcott, a yeoman of Tolland County, Somerset, England. Henry emigrated to America in Mar 1630 and settled in Windsor Connecticut. He was a member of the first Assembly of Connecticut Colony in 1637, a member of the Connecticut House of Magistrates from 1638 to 1655. He married Elizabeth Saunders 19 Jan 1606, she was the daughter of Thomas Saunders of Lydeard, St. Lawrence, England. Children of Henry and Elizabeth are: (a) Henry born 21 Jan 1611 died 12 Jul 1680 married 18 Nov 1641 to Sarah Newberry (b) George died 11 Feb 1662 married Elizabeth Treat (d) Anna married 16 Oct 1646 to Matthew Griswold (e) Simon born 11 Sep 1624 died 11 Sep 1687 married first Martha Pitkin then Joanna Cooke on 19 Mar 1657 (f) Mary born 16 Sep 1689 married 25 Jun 1646 to Job Drake. One additional child was listed as John born 1607 and died at birth.
