Silas C. Giddens enlisted in Lowndes County Infantry on 21 Sep 1861 for a period of 12 months in Captain Benjamin T. Mosley's unit. In November 1861 he appears in company muster rolls listed as present, but sick in hospital. On 9 Aug 1862 he appeared on the register of sick and wounded at Lovingston Hospital, Winchester, Virginia. On 2 May 1863 he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital Number 2, Richmond Virginia. On 9 Jun 1863 he returned to duty. He fought in the Second Manassas Battle, Sharpsburg (Antietam) and on 4 Jul 1863 he was captured at the battle of Gettysburg. On 6 Jul 1863 he was admitted to the USA General Hospital, Frederick, Maryland with remittant fever. On 5 Sep 1863 he was transferred to USA General Hospital West's Buildings, Baltimore, Maryland. On 12 Sep 1863 he returned to Fort McHenry, Maryland. On 15 Sep 1863 he was sent to Point Lookout Maryland and confined by General Schenck. On 3 May 1864 he was exchanged at Port Lookout, Maryland. On 8 May 1864 he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital, Number 3, Richmond, Virginia with debilitas. On 12 May 1864 he was furloughed for 30 days.
