Knight was in the Indian War of 1836-1839 and was Captain of a the Lowndes Militia. On 11 Dec 1840 he was commissioned Major General of the 6th Division of Georgia Militia and stayed this until 1850. When the CSA began he formed the Berrien County Minutemen. This became Company G of the 29th Regiment and he was Major of the Regiment until he retired in 1862. He was Sheriff of Wayne County (1824), Justice of the Peace of Lowndes County (1829-1833), State Senator from Lowndes County (1832, 1834, 1837, 1841). He was Senator from 5th District (1851-1856). He was Justice of the Berrien Inferior Court 1861, and a Delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1868.
