HUSBAND NOTES: - BIOGRAPHY: William Cone was born in North Carolina in the Pee Dee River Section in 1745. He served in the Cherokee War in South Carolina from 1759 to 1760 as a private. He served as a Major in the First Battalion Richmond County Militia during the Revolutionary War and was given a grant of confiscated land in Effingham County, Georgia (deed book A, page 1, Effingham County) by a "resolve" of the General Assembly dated 2/22/1785. He also received land granted 250 acres of bounty in Washington County, Georgia (page 48, Knights Roster of the Revolution in Georgia). He married Keziah Barber in 1765. Keziah Barber was born in 1750, the daughter of William Barber, who was a Revolutionary War soldier. Her sister Cassandra Barber married Matthew Carter the Cones and the Carters were very close and moved to South Carolina in 1779 and lived in Cheraw District and then moved together to Georgia during the War and located in Effingham County, which later became Bulloch County. William Cone served as a Representative from Effingham County in 1785 and 1787. He acquired land on the Satilla River in Camden County, now Glynn County, and lived there in the 1790's. He moved back to his plantation called "Ivanhoe" in Effingham County. In 1796 this became Bulloch County and he was the foreman of the first Grand Jury in May1797 of Superior Court. In November of 1801 he sold his Bulloch County property to David Kennedy (deed book A, page 70, Bulloch County) and moved to Glynn County which later became Camden County in 1805. In 1815 he moved back to Bulloch County and lived with his son Aaron until his death in 1822. Keziah Barber died while they were living in Camden County. LAND: The basis for the grant of 200 acres of confiscated land on 22 Feb 1785 was not for distinquisted service in the Revolutionary War but for having exerted himself in suppressing robberies and apprehending robbers in Effingham County and adjoining Counties in 1784 after the Revolutionary War was over and the State was free and independent. Lawlessness was rampant all over the state (which in those days was only 6 to 7 Counties) and law enforcement difficult. Cone got together his neighbors and at their own expense and with their horses and arms tracked down robbers and took them into custody and handed them over to the Sherrif. This consumed months of their time. The Executive Council (Governor's Cabinet) adopted unanimously a resolution on 17 Dec 1784 requesting and urging the General Assembly to make a grant to Captain Cone of 200 acres of confiscated land for appreciation of his service. It further ordered the sum of 125 sterling to be paid out of State Treasury to Captain Cone and his men as reward. (Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Volume VIII, page 390). BIOGRAPHY-CHILDREN-RESIDENCE-LAND: William Cone, born circa 1745, in the Pee Dee District of North Carolina was the son of William Cone. He married Keziah Barber in 1765. She was born in 1750 in North Carolina and was the daughter of William Barber. They lived in Glynn County, then Camden County, and returned to Bulloch County between 1812 and 1816. At his death he deeded all his property to son Aaron Cone on 24 Jun 1816 (deed book AAAA, page 311). William died between that date and Oct 1816. He is buried at Cone Cemetery near Ivanhoe. The grave is marked by the DAR. He had 8 children and was granted a Bounty Land in Effingham County on 22 Feb 1785. It was later cut into Bulloch County in 1796. An inventory and appraisment of his estate was made 4 Mar 1823 (book B, page 128-129). Membership was shown in the Lower Lotts, Creek Primitive Baptist Church constituted on 13, Sep 1801 by Elder William Cone and Henry Cook. In Deed Book A 1796-1805 p.70-71 listed on 28 Nov 1801 and recorded 18 Feb 1803 an indenture between William Cone Sr. and "Cuzziah" his wife of Bulloch County to David Kennedy, planter of Glynn County 1000 acres for $1550. (In the signature wife's name is spelled "Kizir"). Deed Book AAA, 1814-1818 p. 311 on 24 June 1818 and recorded 12 July 1818 a deed of gift from William Cone, planter in Bulloch County "for and in consideration of the good will and affection for which I have and do bear towards my beloved son Aaron Cone, one tract of land containing 1000 acres; 1 half tract land containing 330 acres in Glynn County, 7 negroes, horses, furniture ..." Witness: David Williams and John Lanier. Inferior Court held on 1 Jan 1821 ordered William Cone, Aaron Cone, and Peter Cone appointed guardians to the person and property of John Goodman, orphan of David Goodman, Jr. Inferior Court of 4 July 1831 ordred Aaron Cone administrator of estate of William Cone dec'd be disharged and exhonerated from administrator of estate. Ordered Aaron Cone be appointed guardian of Joseph Cone and William Cone, orphans of William Cone, dec'd. Inferior Court held 6 January 1823 ordered Aaron Cone to obtain letters of administrator on the estate of William Cone, dec'd. Inferior Court of 3 March 1835 appointed Peter Cone guardian of Joseph Cone, orphan of William Cone dec'd in lieu of Aaron Cone dec'd. PROBATE: The Book of B Wills 1816-1836 p. 138-140 shows on 16 Feb 1824 and recorded 20 July 1824 an inventory of sale of property of William Cone dec'd. (Bulloch County, Georgia Genealogical Source Material). LAND: Glynn County Records list William Cone, Sr. of Camden County to James Bardin of Glynn County, deed dated 24 Jan 1811 conveying 200 acres in Glynn County, granted Mary Brogden, Adjoining lands of Jonathon Knight. Grantors wife Keziah Cone, waived dower. (The Georgia Genealogical Magazine, Folks Huxford, editor, Volume 9, page 65). LAND: Deed Book A-B of Effingham County, page 1, grants William Cone, Esq. of Effingham County a gift from the State of said land lying on the Great Ogeechee River. This property owned by William Powell an enemy of the State was confiscated under the act of confiscation and attainder. It is said that "Cone has rendered the State some extraordinary services" and the General Assembly on 22 Feb 1786 directed the Commisioners to make him titled to said property as a gift for those services. BIOGRAPHY: In the minutes of Camden Superior Court it is found in Deed Book 1, page 13 of Camden County, a record of seperation agreement dated 8 Jan 1812 between William Cone and his wife Martha in which it is agreed that thereafter each should hold his and her own property free from any claim on the part of the other "as though never married". The same year William Cone, Sr. filed suit for divorce aGeorgiainst wife Martha Cone. It was continued in the Court Docket from term to term from 1812 until October of 1816 when it was dismissed because of the death of the plantiff. William Cone, Sr, returned to Bulloch County between 1812 and 1816 and on 24 Jun 1816 deeded all his property to son Aaron Cone. The deed of gift recorded in deed book 4A, page 311 of Bulloch County conveys 1000 acres of land in Bulloch County, 1/2 interest in 350 acres in Glynn County granted him and John Hagin, 7 slaves, 1 horse, all household goods, crop plantation tools, rifle, and all money on hand due to him. William Cone was ill during this time and died the next year. He did not die in 1822, but instead in 1816. The reason for the confusion was son Aaron Cone was not appointed Administrator of his estate until 6 Jan 1823. William Cone was a Representative from Glynn County in 1804 and shortly after that moved to Camden County. He was Justice of Peace in the 35th District of Camden County in 1806, but resigned in 1808 and was succeeded by his son William Cone, Jr. on 25 Feb 1808. William Cone, Sr. was a Grand Juror in the Oct term of 1809 of Camden Superior Court - but was excused because he was over 60 years of age (Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Volume V, page 544-545). !BIOGRAPHY-SPOUSE-CHILDREN: Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, compiled and published by Folks Huxford, Volume II, pages 64-66.
